Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 108 PM EDT Fri Sep 26 2025

.SYNOPSIS... A few showers may develop this afternoon, mainly in the mountains, but otherwise high pressure builds back into the area through the rest of today and into next week with dry weather and warm temperatures. A cold front moves through late Monday and Tuesday, allowing for much cooler but still pleasant weather for midweek.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Impacts and Key Message: * No significant weather impacts expected.

Generally quiet weather is expected through the near term. Upper level troughing will continue to move through the region today. A cold front will also move across the forecast area this afternoon and evening from north to south, interacting with a weak shortwave. This forcing and upslope flow may lead to some showers over northern and central New Hampshire as well as the western Maine mountains. Showers should start to diminish with the lack of daytime heating by early evening. High pressure will start to build in behind the front tonight, leading to calm winds and the usual valley fog given the recent soaking rains.

Afternoon highs will be warmer today, especially outside of the mountains where we should see plenty of clearing, mainly in the mid 60s and lower 70s over northern New Hampshire and the western Maine mountains, to the mid 70s to lower 80s elsewhere. Lows tonight will generally be in the 40s across the north and the 50s south. Some radiational cooling is likely given the clear skies and light winds.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY/... Impacts and Key Message: * No significant weather impacts expected.

Mild temperatures persist on Saturday with highs mainly in the 70s (some 60s north). High pressure slides off to the east with a dry airmass settling in behind the front, but southerly return flow could advect some high clouds into the region from the south. Valley fog will once again be possible Saturday night, but may be just confined to the northern valleys given the drier airmass. Lows will be in the mid to upper 40s across the north with 50s expected elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Overview: Dry weather conditions will persist through much of next week as strong high pressure builds over New England. Above average temperatures are expected Sunday through Tuesday before a cold front brings cooler temperatures for the later half of the week.

Impacts: No significant weather related impacts are expected other than continued drought conditions.

Forecast Details: A weak sfc warm front will lift northward across northern New England on Sunday morning, placing the region into the warm sector with highs reaching the lower to perhaps middle 80s south of the mtns. A few spots could potentially approach daily records. Skies will be mainly sunny with southwesterly flow. Radiational cooling will allow lows to bottom out into the lower 40s across some interior valleys with 50s in most other locations. Another warm day is expected on Monday with high pressure remaining in control with highs into the upper 70s/lower 80s for most locations and lows into the 40s and 50s. One more well above avg day is then likely on Tuesday with highs into the middle to upper 70s and mostly sunny skies prevailing.

Cooler temperatures will begin to return Tuesday night with lows into the 30s across the north with lower to middle 40s south. Despite a plethora of sunshine on Wednesday and Thursday, high temperatures will be closer to seasonable averages with highs into the 60s and lows into the 30s. This will bring our next potential for perhaps a widespread frost or freeze.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Short Term...Mainly VFR conditions are expected through the 18z TAF period, but overnight fog could lead to a period of LIFR to MVFR visibilities at KMHT/KCON/KLEB/KHIE. Fog will lift shortly after sunrise. A few showers are possible this afternoon across northern and central New Hampshire, potentially impacting KLEB and KHIE.

Long Term...Other than nighttime valley FG at KLEB, KHIE, and KCON mainly VFR conditions will prevail through the period with winds less than 20 kts.

&&

.MARINE... Short Term...Seas continue to subside this afternoon. Therefore, we were able to cancel the SCA a little bit early as wave heights have fallen below 5ft. Southwesterly winds prevail the rest of today, before shifting northerly overnight tonight as a front crosses the waters. Winds then shift back to southerly Saturday afternoon.

Long Term...High pressure will keep winds and seas below SCA criteria through early next week. SCA conditions are then possible towards mid-week behind a frontal passage. Long period swells are also likely to increase late week from distant tropical disturbances.
