Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 641 AM EDT Tue Sep 30 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Light rainfall will gradually come to an end today. High pressure will build in from the north and will remain in place through early next week, resulting in an extended period of dry weather.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 155 AM EDT Tuesday...

1) Light rain continues through this morning.

2) Clouds continue through tonight, but rain will gradually taper off.

Rain expected to continue through the morning as moisture as drawn in off the Atlantic. Best rainfall coverage will be along and east of the Blue Ridge, with only isolated showers further west. Will begin to lose the moisture conveyor throughout today, therefore will begin to see rainfall coverage taper to just a few isolated showers and drizzle by the afternoon. Clouds are expected to linger so another mostly cloudy day looks to be in store. Cool northeast flow and clouds will keep temperatures on the cooler side again with mid/upper 60s and low 70s for highs.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... As of 1230 AM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

1) Dry weather will persist through the rest of the workweek.

2) Temperatures should dip a little by Thursday due to a cool northeast flow as high pressure wedges against the Blue Ridge.

High pressure from eastern Canada will build across the Appalachian Mountains on Wednesday to start a notable stretch of dry weather. As this high wedges itself against the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge by Thursday, a cool northeast flow should cause temperatures to drop a little with lows mainly in the 40s and highs generally in the 60s. Burkes Garden might even fall into the upper 30s with enough radiational cooling. The northeast flow should begin to weaken towards Friday as the center of high pressure drifts offshore.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 1230 AM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

1) Conditions stay dry during the upcoming weekend, but some moisture might return by Monday in the mountains.

2) Temperatures should moderate over the weekend.

The upcoming weekend stays dry with high pressure centered off the East Coast. As the flow turns more southerly, the increasing warm air advection should nudge high temperatures into the 70s for most locations. High pressure will slowly track further away from the coast on Monday, which might open the potential for moisture to return northward across the mountains to introduce a chance of showers for the early part of the next workweek.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 640 AM EDT Tuesday...

Patchy IFR/LIFR through daybreak as rain and low clouds continue. Rain will taper off late morning and early afternoon and cigs will return to VFR, but clouds generally remain OVC/BKN through much of the day. Mostly VFR tonight, but another round of patchy fog could be possible in mountain valleys resulting in brief periods of sub-VFR.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

Dry high pressure will build in by Wednesday, providing for an extended period of VFR into the weekend, outside of morning patchy fog.
