AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Albany NY 928 AM EDT Thu Oct 9 2025

.UPDATE... As of 927 AM EDT...This update is to expire the Frost Advisory this morning that was in place for the eastern Catskills, southern VT outside eastern Windham County, VT, the west-central Mohawk Valley, Helderbergs, and the northern Taconics, and to set the entire Freeze Warning for the entire forecast area outside the southern Adirondacks (where the growing season ended). High pressure is building in today with lighter winds than yesterday and cooler than normal temps by close to 10 degrees.

&&

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure building into the area from the Great Lakes region this afternoon will provide fair weather through Saturday. Below normal temperatures with widespread frost and freezing temperatures tonight into Friday morning will gradually moderate to seasonable levels by Saturday. A coastal storm will bring clouds and some rain to the region Sunday into early next week, along with breezy conditions.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Key Message:

- Widespread frost/freezing temperatures expected for tonight/Friday morning across most of eastern NY/western New England, where a Freeze Warning is now in effect.

Discussion:

As of 130 AM EDT, patchy clouds continue to stream south/southeast across portions of the Hudson Valley region and east into the Taconics/Berkshires. These clouds may linger overnight before eroding closer to daybreak.

Expect a mostly sunny but chilly day today with temperatures only reaching the lower/mid 50s for most valley areas, and 45-50 across higher terrain.

Cold tonight with widespread frost/freezing temperatures expected. We have upgraded the Freeze Watch to a Freeze Warning for all areas outside of the southwest Adirondacks where the growing season has already ended. Lows ranging from the mid 20s to lower 30s.

Continued fair weather Friday along with cool temperatures, with highs reaching the mid 50s to lower 60s in valleys, and lower/mid 50s across higher terrain. Still chilly Friday night, with lows in the 30s for most areas, and some additional frost/freeze headlines likely will be needed, especially across portions of the upper Hudson Valley into western New England. Patchy fog may be a bit greater in coverage Friday night/Saturday morning within river valleys.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Continued fair weather Saturday with more seasonable temperatures reaching the 60s for most areas, with lows Saturday night in the mid 30s to lower/mid 40s.

Coastal storm looks to track northward along mid Atlantic coast for Sunday through early next week, though it may tend to loop back southward. Some bands of rain should reach areas along and south of I-90 Sunday afternoon, and possibly north of I-90 Sunday night, with periods of rain/drizzle possibly lingering through Wednesday as the storm system only slowly departs. It also looks breezy, especially across the mid Hudson Valley, Taconics and NW CT, where some gusts of 25-35 mph could occur late Sunday into Monday.

With prospects for clouds and some rain, daytime highs should remain below normal Sunday-Monday with highs mainly in the 50s and lows in the 40s. Slight warming possible by Tuesday- Wednesday, with high temps reaching the lower/mid 60s, though could remain cooler if thicker clouds/areal coverage of rain remains greater. Lows mainly in the 40s.

.AVIATION /13Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Through 12z Friday...VFR conditions prevail this morning as high pressure continues to slide eastward from the Great Lakes. Lingering clouds in the Hudson Valley are seen dissipating on infrared satellite imagery, so clear skies are anticipated by mid morning. VFR conditions are anticipated to continue through the entirety of the 12z TAF cycle as this very dry airmass should mitigate fog development at the usual sites tonight. Winds will prevail out of the northwest to northeast throughout the period, becoming breezy this morning at sustained speeds of 8 to 10 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. But the loss of daytime heating this evening will see the gradual decrease in wind speeds for the overnight period.

Outlook...

Friday Night: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX. Saturday: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX. Saturday Night: Low Operational Impact. Slight Chance of SHRA. Sunday: Moderate Operational Impact. Chance of SHRA. Sunday Night: Moderate Operational Impact. Likely SHRA. Columbus Day: Moderate Operational Impact. Chance of SHRA.
