878 FXUS61 KALY 300549 AFDALYAREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Albany NY 149 AM EDT Tue Sep 30 2025
.UPDATE... As of 9:20 PM EDT...Quick update to drop temperatures through the next several hours, as with just the think high clouds around many areas have radiatively cooled to 4-8 degrees below the previous hourly temperature forecasts. Little change to overnight lows, as dewpoints remain mainly on track, though. We did add some more patchy fog based on the current trends. Otherwise, previous forecast remains on track with more details in the previous discussion below...
&&
.SYNOPSIS... Dry conditions are expected through next weekend as high pressure remains in control. A cold front will drop southward Tuesday, allowing for cooler temperatures during the mid to late week. Warmer weather returns for the upcoming weekend.

.DISCUSSION... Clear to partly cloudy tonight as high clouds persist, especially areas from I-90 south. These high clouds may keep overnight min temps a bit milder for these areas along with slightly less coverage of fog. For areas north of I-90, slightly cooler as clouds remain thinner, and also a bit greater chance of at least patchy fog formation. Lows in the 40s across northern areas and 50s elsewhere.
A cold front will be dropping southward during Tuesday. Moisture will remain limited, so no precipitation is expected. However, winds will increase in the wake of the front and may become gusty Tuesday afternoon, especially where channeled north/northeast flow develops across portions of the upper Hudson River Valley, where some gusts up to 25-30 mph could occur late in the day. High temps mainly in the 70s, except 60s for northern areas.
Cool and breezy for Tuesday night into Wednesday, with north/northeast winds occasionally gusting up to 25 mph, especially within the Hudson River Valley due to channeled flow. Lows in the mid 30s across the southern Adirondacks, to the lower/mid 40s elsewhere. Highs Wednesday ranging from the mid 50s to lower/mid 60s. Patchy clouds may be around Wednesday morning before clearing in the afternoon.
Widespread frost/freeze potential for Wednesday night as high pressure nears the region amid a dry airmass. Lows should be in the mid 20s to mid/upper 30s. Frost Advisories/Freeze Warnings will likely be needed for many areas outside of the southwest Adirondacks where the growing season ends Oct 1. Highs Thursday in the 50s/60s.
Chilly again Thursday night with some areas of frost possible. Otherwise gradual warming trend begins Friday and continues through Sunday. Lows Friday morning mainly in the 30s. Max temps in the 60s/70s Friday, and 70s to around 80 Saturday/Sunday. Overnight lows mainly in the 40s to around 50.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Through 06z Wednesday...Thick cirrus canopy continues to overspread ALB, POU, and PSF tonight while the canopy thins out towards GFL. Given clearer skies at GFL and temperatures cooling towards the respective dew point, patchy fog has developed resulting in intermittent IFR vis. Continue to show prevailing IFR vis at GFL with a TEMPO for intermittent improvements to MVFR vis. Less confidence at PSF for fog given thicker cirrus canopy but given latest dew point depression of 2 degrees, maintained a TEMPO group for IFR vis through 10 UTC before prevailing IFR vis for the early A.M hours.
Any fog dissipates early morning then VFR flying conditions through the end of the TAF period. Near calm winds through early morning, then winds become N/NE by 14-16 UTC and turn breezy with sustained winds 8-12 kt with gusts up to 15-20kts (strongest at GFL and ALB due to enhanced channel flow) through early evening. While gusts weaken by 00 - 03 UTC, sustained northerly winds remain near 5-10kts through the end of the TAF period. Low-level wind shear may need to be added in future updates (mainly GFL and ALB) for the evening hours as a cold front pushes through the region and winds in the 1-2kft layer near 25-30kts.
Outlook...
Tuesday Night: Low Operational Impact. Breezy. NO SIG WX. Wednesday: Low Operational Impact. Breezy. NO SIG WX. Wednesday Night-Saturday: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX.
