.DISCUSSION...
As the recent low pressure system migrates across the California/Nevada border this afternoon, showers and snow chances will persist. Snow is possible above 8000 feet, with some light accumulations (0.5" up to 3" for the highest elevations) found along the Sierra from the Tahoe Basin south into Mono County. Snow showers will taper this evening, lifting into the Great Basin overnight.
The exit of the low will allow for some drier air to filter in behind the system. The temperatures will remain below average for the weekend and early week, with cool northwesterly breezes remaining through Saturday. Winds will remain largely northerly into Sunday, ensuring we keep the colder air in place. Overnight lows will remain below freezing for our neighbors in Sierra valleys, while leeside valleys hang onto lows in the upper 30s to low 40s.
By midweek, the low is trying to escape the western region, which allows for some warming as a minor ridging pattern attempts to take hold. Beyond midweek, ensemble guidance indicates a retrograding trough may arrive for Thursday, bringing around more chances for showers. As can be the case with guidance this far out, details will become clearer as we go forward in time. The main takeaway is that we are in a fall pattern, which can provide a variety of solutions in the ensembles. HRICH
