Oregon is a diverse state with a wide range of climates and weather conditions. The state has everything from hot and dry deserts to cold and snowy mountains. In general, Oregon experiences four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall.
Usually when people think of Oregon weather they think rain. This is because the majority of the population lives in the northwest quarter of the state where the most rain falls. While the Oregon coast can receive up to 90 inches and Portland 44 inches of precipitation a year the eastern two-thirds of the state is high desert where as little as nine inches of precipitation falls annually. And the largest town in southwest Oregon, Medford, only receives about 18 inches of precipitation a year.
In most parts of Oregon, winter lasts from December to February. During this time, temperatures can range from mild to cold, depending on the region. The majority of precipitation during winter falls as snow in the mountains and as rain elsewhere. However, some areas near the California border experience occasional periods of severe drought during winter.
Spring generally lasts from March to May in Oregon. This time of year is characterized by moderate temperatures and frequent rainfall. Springtime is also when many flowers begin to bloom throughout the state.
Summer lasts from June to August in Oregon and is typically the hottest season statewide. Temperatures during summer can reach up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas, although it is more common for them to be in the 70s or 80s. Additionally, summer is when most of Oregon's rainfall occurs.
Fall generally lasts from September to November in Oregon and brings cooler temperatures along with falling leaves colorfully decorating trees branches. Like springtime, fall also brings plenty rain showers.
